What Is Drug Abuse?

“Abuse” is a word which means different things to different people when it comes to drug use. This is why people working in the field of alcohol treatment and rehabilitation prefer phrases such as harmful use or drug dependence, which have been defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

It is worth noting that the definitions do not include reference to the social or criminal justice consequences. The use of illegal drugs can result in a criminal record, which can cause issues for the individual, even years later.
