Gaenor, now 44, had a successful career in sales within the financial services sector and, like many others, was a social weekend drinker. Among her friends, she was known as the life and soul of the party. However, when the COVID-19 lockdown hit, everything changed. The isolation intensified her already present anxiety, leading her to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism - a habit that quickly spiralled into a serious problem.

Gaenor’s Journey to Recovery with Aspire
It wasn’t until her sister found Aspire through an online search for help in Doncaster that she realised there was support available. With limited options elsewhere - her GP unable to assist until she stopped drinking - Aspire became the crucial lifeline she needed.
Understanding Substance Misuse and Changing Mindset
Aspire helped Gaenor understand the profound effects alcohol was having on her brain and mental health. She learned that recovery isn’t simply about willpower; it’s about breaking destructive patterns and changing one’s mindset. The support provided her with hope and a safe, non-judgmental space to openly and honestly confront her struggles.
Gaenor embraced new coping strategies such as walking, practicing meditation, reading, and even completing a Reiki course. These activities helped her replace drinking with healthier habits and regain control over her anxiety.
From Client to Mentor
After 12 months alcohol-free, Gaenor’s journey took a new and inspiring turn. She trained to become a mentor, driven by a desire to support others facing similar challenges. Her lived experience gave her unique insight and empathy, making her a powerful source of encouragement for others in recovery.
She volunteered at the New Beginnings Detox Unit, attending groups and offering support, and later took on a receptionist role for the NHS at New Beginnings. Within three months, she secured a permanent position as a Patient Flow Administrator at New Beginnings - a place she describes as “special” and filled with great people.
A Life Transformed
Now over two and a half years sober, Gaenor reflects on how giving up alcohol was the best decision she ever made. She has lost weight, improved her mental and physical health, and enjoys a more outdoorsy lifestyle - taking her dog for long walks and appreciating a clear head.
She emphasises that recovery is not easy and requires strength, willpower, and support.
Gaenor also wants to dispel common misconceptions about services like Aspire: “It’s not just for homeless people or heroin users - it’s for anyone struggling with addiction”.
Final Thoughts
Gaenor’s story shows that substance misuse can affect anyone, but recovery is possible with resilience and hope. Transformation can and does happen. With the help of Aspire and her family, she was able to break free from alcohol and build a fulfilling new life - and now she’s giving back by helping others do the same.
